Ok. So this is not an easy task. With over 130 eateries in bondi beach, stiff competition has driven quality and there’s much to enjoy by way of eating and drinking in our savvy seaside village. In no particular order, here’s my current top 10 salubrious selections of delectable dishes and drinks…
1. Top restaurant & bar
Mamasan, 57-59 Beach Road (enter Glenayr Ave)
Adam and Gemma have created an artful space and magnificent menu for their top notch Asian Tapas restaurant. Start with One Bite Beef and “Smells Like Old Man” sake. Then go back again and again until you’ve tried it all (I have).
2. Top bondi newcomer
Chapter One Coffee & Wine Room, Shop 3A, 34 Campbell Pde (Cnr Sir Thomas Mitchell Dve)
With coffee and wine in the title how can you go wrong! An all-round top spot with no expense spared. Perfect service, air-con, free wi-fi, ocean views, great coffee, top-notch wines and cosy, classy furnishings. Fab.
3. Top specialty cafe
Gertrude & Alice, 46 Hall Street
If you’re into good coffee, fresh organic food, walls piled high with books ,friendly service and perfect eclectic decor, this is your spot.
4. Top all-rounder for food, drinks & views
North Bondi Italian, 118-120 Ramsgate Avenue
If the fine food and brilliant beverages don’t get you hooked (you must try their Majitos), then just grab a spot on the balcony and soak up the view and vibe of bondi beach. Perfect.
5. Top spot for arvo cheese & wine
The Shop & Wine Bar, 78 Curlewis Street
Loved by locals, a casual little hole-in-the-wall wonder serving quality bread, dips and cheeses to accompany it’s fine wine list.
6. Top views and tourist must-see
Bondi Icebergs Bar, 1 Notts Avenue
It would just be plain remiss of me not to mention the superb panoramic views and beachside elegance of the Icebergs Bar, high atop the cliffs at South Bondi. Glorious.
7. Top fresh local seafood
Bondi’s Best Seafood, 37 Campbell Parade
Fabulous seafood providore. Either dine-in at the cafe and sushi bar or take away bondi’s best gourmet fish and chips and head to the north bondi beach grassy knoll.
8. Top boutique bar
The Crossing, 13 O’Brien Street
Designed by award winning architects Six Degrees and serving a fine selection of wines, cocktails and delicious share plate fare. A classy addition to the local offerings.
9. Top affordable restaurant
Nina’s Ploy Thai, 132 Warners Avenue (enter Wairoa Ave)
Look past the basic furnishings and table-top tissue boxes and experience this long-standing delight of simple, affordable, authentic and delicious Thai.
10. Top atmosphere for fun in the sun
Ravesi’s Hotel, Cnr Campbell Pde & Hall St
A happening hot spot of classy cocktails, fine wine, great music, ambience and people-watching. Something for everyone here.
