Ok. So this is not an easy task. With over 130 eateries in bondi beach, stiff competition has driven quality and there’s much to enjoy by way of eating and drinking in our savvy seaside village. In no particular order, here’s my current top 10 salubrious selections of delectable dishes and drinks…
1. Top restaurant & bar
Mamasan, 57-59 Beach Road (enter Glenayr Ave)
Adam and Gemma have created an artful space and magnificent menu for their top notch Asian Tapas restaurant. Start with One Bite Beef and “Smells Like Old Man” sake. Then go back again and again until you’ve tried it all (I have).
2. Top bondi newcomer
Mr Moustache, 69-71 Hall Street (just in a bit past the fabulous A Tavola)
A French-inspired Mexican Bistrot and Cantina offering tasty Mexican street food to share and wash down with the magic of Mezcal. With a warm welcoming and funky buzz, it’s hard to resist in the heart of the new Hall St strip.
3. Top specialty cafe
Gertrude & Alice, 46 Hall Street
If you’re into good coffee, fresh organic food, walls piled high with books ,friendly service and perfect eclectic decor, this is your spot.
4. Top all-rounder
Mad Pizza, 15 O’Brien St
You know when you just want to go somewhere that everybody loves – where you can relax, soak up the vibe, eat tasty food to share and be welcomed warmly by happy, friendly staff? Yep, this is it.
5. Top spot for arvo cheese & wine
The Shop & Wine Bar, 78 Curlewis Street
Loved by locals, a casual little hole-in-the-wall wonder serving quality bread, dips and cheeses to accompany it’s fine wine list.
6. Top views and tourist must-see
Bondi Icebergs Bar, 1 Notts Avenue
It would just be plain remiss of me not to mention the superb panoramic views and beachside elegance of the Icebergs Bar, high atop the cliffs at South Bondi. Glorious.
7. Top fresh local seafood
Bondi’s Best Seafood, 37 Campbell Parade
Fabulous seafood providore. Either dine-in at the cafe and sushi bar or take away bondi’s best gourmet fish and chips and head to the north bondi beach grassy knoll.
8. Top place for ice-cream
Gelato Messina, 61 Hall Street
This place is ranked No.1 out of 5,093 Sydney restaurants on Trip Advisor. Need I say more? It is technically, actually, literally THE BEST.
9. Top affordable restaurant
Nina’s Ploy Thai, 132 Warners Avenue (enter Wairoa Ave)
Look past the basic furnishings and table-top tissue boxes and experience this long-standing delight of simple, affordable, authentic and delicious Thai.
10. Top atmosphere for fun in the sun
The Bucket List, down directly opposite the beach at the Bondi Pav
The service can be a little laidback but you simply can’t beat the beachside buzz when the sun in shining. If you can’t be happy here you can’t be happy anywhere!
