Gyuto Monks 2014

Gyuto Monks of Tibet Echoes of Enlightenment Tour at Bondi Beach Sydney

Under the auspices of Gyuto House Australia, in 2014 the Gyuto Monks of Tibet will celebrate 20 years of touring Australia to promote their values of kindness, compassion and love. The theme of this year’s tour is “Echoes of Enlightenment” and is led by Gyuto elder, 76 year-old Gen Lama Thupten Phuntsok – one of the very few survivors of the 1959 invasion of Tibet who escaped to India with the Dalai Lama.

The monks have visited the Bondi community since Good Friday 1994, and established themselves as a fixture on the local scene with a 2008 fortnight workshop at the Bondi Pavilion. Now an annual event, thousands attend their workshops each year, which comprise meditation, kids activities, the creation of a 2 metre sand mandala and daily talks on leading a happier life.

Attendees in 2014 will also be treated to the Gyuto monks extraordinary deep harmonic chanting – which the renowned Professor Robert Thurman has likened to a “National Choir or the Royal Choir of Westminster.” Nominated for a Grammy in 2010, this year the monks have been signed to Decca/Universal Music, the world’s largest record label.

The monks’ 2013 album, “Chants” was launched in Sydney in June and quickly reached #1 on the classical charts and #26 on the pop charts. After headlining at the Glastonbury Festival, the BBC featured them in a short film alongside the Rolling Stones.

During their time at Bondi the Gyuto Monks of Tibet can often be seen walking along the beach and engaging with the local community.
