SurfAid International is a non-profit humanitarian organisation whose aim is to improve the health, wellbeing and self-reliance of people living in isolated regions connected to us through surfing.
Since 2000, SurfAid’s programs in Indonesia have been saving thousands of lives in isolated communities in the Mentawai and Nias islands off West Sumatra. Programs include malaria prevention, water and sanitation, health and nutrition, and emergency preparedness to respond to events such as the 2010 tsunami.
SurfAid’s goal is to empower communities to help themselves and build local capacity so their improved health resilience is sustainable. They advocate health and wellbeing for all and create collaborative relationships with other stakeholder groups to further sustained change in behaviour and development.
SurfAid’s activities epitomise the universal human values expressed through local and global citizenship – empathy and compassion, respect for community, social justice and equity for all, economic, environmental and social sustainability, and a belief that we can all make a difference.
