You really all should have perfectly functioning mobile phones by now, even if visiting from regional Kazakhstan. Reception in bondi beach isn’t too bad (except for perpetually poor Vodaphone) and you’ll find the local café culture is still largely pro-phone (eg. it’s more common to see a gaggle of gals oooing and ahhhing over the latest iPhone app rather than newborns in prams).
There’s at least one café owner in bondi who’s banned phone chat whilst ordering coffees but generally we’re pretty accepting of the anti-social behaviour of yakking on our little flat-bricks-of-fun while out to lunch (lest we have to follow the rules of prohibition when our own device yearns beepingly for attention).
Phonecards can be purchased from convenience stores but, really, there are usually better options these days. Go to www.truphone.com to learn about Tru SIM or Tru App options. Or check out TravelSIM or Lonely Planet’s ekit (lonelyplanet.ekit.com).
